Hudson Ship Aids in Rescue of 180 Migrants

Public Relations

The Hudson-operated bulk carrier, KN Future, played an integral role in rescue efforts that saved 50 migrants adrift in a distressed craft north of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The number of migrants rescued in the area that day totaled 180 people.

Capt. Severiano Guleng Jr., the ship master, said his crew received a SOLAS request from MRCC Las Palmas shortly after midnight to mobilize and conduct a search and rescue exercise nearby. The KN Future wasted no time in deviating from its intended route to join the call.

After two hours of diligent searching, the KN Future spotted a light coming from the distressed craft, arriving on the scene minutes later to discover the drifting boat filled with 50 migrants. Officials instructed the KN Future to maintain her position while they summoned a rescue ship for the migrants.

The rescue vessel Guardamar Talia, sailing under the flag of Spain, reached the scene at 07:00 and pulled 50 migrants to safety, whereupon the KN Future resumed its passage. No fatalities were reported.

Hours later, the Guardamar Talia reported saving two other nearby inflatable boats, each with 65 sub-Saharan passengers. All of the more than 180 migrants disembarked in Puerto del Rosario upon Fuerteventura.

Hudson commends the Captain and Crew of the KN Future for their swift action and unwavering persistence and are grateful for their service!
