Denmark Examining Freight Forwarders’ Use of Russian Railways
Denmark’s business minister said his office is considering a response to freight forwarders that are using Russian railways to transport cargo to Europe.
Some freight forwarders in Europe have turned to Russian railways to overcome transportation delays caused by ships detouring around Africa to avoid a congested Suez Canal and Houthi rebels.
The business minister, Morten Bødskov, noted that the use of Russian railways remains legal, despite sanctions imposed on Russia since its conflict in Ukraine began in 2022. But the use bolsters the Russian war economy through the taxes it raises.
Some transporters have internal bans against crossing Russia with goods.
