Clean & Green™

Hudson President’s Call to Action!

Public Relations

Hudson continues to choose the planet over profit by refusing to employ ships fitted with Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), better known as “scrubbers”, instead opting to responsibly burn cleaner fuels.  However, Hudson remains in the minority while the rest of the world catches up to this future-focused approach.

With the difference in price between conventional marine oil and low-sulphur oil increasing, seeing the highest growth in four months at the end of August, scrubber usage is also accelerating [shippingwatch.com].  Instead of taking Hudson’s approach to true sulphur cap compliance, numerous ship owners and operators are choosing to profit off scrubber pollution.

Nearly five years since the enforcement of the IMO's sulphur regulations, it is evident that decisions regarding abidance, both in method and execution, should not be left solely to the industry. Nevertheless, despite strengthening data proving that use of these toxic polluting devices is harming the air and oceans alike, large-scale progress in restrictions and bans remains slow.

Recognizing the need for rapid action, Hudson President, Avi Eilon (“Eilon”) is taking a more personal approach to Hudson’s no-scrubber policy.  Inspired by a recent Letter from Congress that specifically highlights the need to “Phase out and ban the use of sulfur scrubbers on ships in U.S. waters”, Eilon has empowered Hudson employees to take initiative and help foster change.

In an unprecedented companywide letter circulated earlier this month to its over 500 employees and sailors, Eilon requested employees join him in signing a petition to encourage U.S. President Biden to exercise his legislative power by issuing an executive order “on maritime decarbonization, including a complete ban on scrubbers in US waters.”

Until the IMO takes stringent measures on global EGCS usage, it’s up to all of us to advocate for our planet.  Hudson encourages all employees, partners, stakeholders and customers to take action against these harmful, ocean-polluting technologies by saying “NO” to scrubbers.
